Summer!

It looks like your herb garden was a huge success!
Great job on all your work this year!
Thanks for sharing the picture of the rainbow. It's beautiful!

Have a super summer!

Week 30 Contact

This week I finished all of my second grade math!!!
I can't wait to get started with my third grade math!
These are the little gardens that we planted.  I planted flowers and helped with the herb garden.
This is the herb garden.  There is cilantro, basil, parsley, and some others . . . but I can't remember.
We talked about rainbows a little while ago and this one was in our backyard this week.  Isn't it pretty?  It was sunny and raining.   Just perfect for a rainbow!

Yummy!

The Chocolate Factory looks so fun! How would you like to work there? I would probably get in trouble for sampling too many of the candies! I had an Oreo today with peanut butter and chocolate on it. Maybe you can make some of the things at home.

Week 29 Contact

This week I have started doing more multiplication facts.  So far I have done my 2's, 5's and 10's.  I really like multiplying.   In dance class we are working on an alligator dance to perform at the farmers market in June.     This week I also planted a bunch of different plants.  We planted some herbs like cilantro.  I can't wait to help my mom make some homemade salsa with our own cilantro.  We also planted tomatoes, peanuts, aloe vera and some flowers.  I will have to take some pictures and show you later what they look like!!!

Week 28 Contact

We got to go the Chocolate Factory!!!  It was sooooo much fun!  We even read a book about a chocolate factory.
He let me taste the chocolate, but he gave me a chocolate mustache first.
 Yum!
This is the candy maker showing us how he makes different chocolates.
These are pretzels dipped in caramel and then dipped in chocolate.
I even got to help put sprinkles on the chocolate covered oreos.   This was the yummiest field trip we have ever been on!

Made a fossil?

Those fossils are so cool! How did you make a fossil? I thought fossils took thousands of years to form.

Week 27 Contact

I got to go to a dinosaur museum when I was in Utah.  This is a T-Rex head.

These are some different types of fossils.

This is where they clean up the fossils.  They have to be very careful and use small brushes to get the dirt off.
This is fossil poop.  Kind of gross!!!!

This is a giant alligator head.  It was as tall as me and even bigger than the T-Rex.  Crazy!!!!

Week 26 Contact

This week I got to study fossils.  It was so cool!!!  We even got to make our own fossils!
These are the different fossils we got to look at.
This one is of a leaf.
 This is a shell.
 This is another shell.
This is a little animal that used to live in the ocean.  I don't remember the name though!
This is a tooth.  It's super sharp.
Next week we get to go to a actual fossil museum.  I am so excited!

Busy!

Sorry if I haven't gotten a chance to post to the blog recently. I've been a busy boy recently! Thank you for keeping up on your posts!

Rainbows

Rainbows sure are amazing! I've never heard of the experiment with milk. Maybe I'll have to try that one with my kids. I'm glad you still get to go to dance. Hopefully you had a nice spring break.

Week 25 Contact

This was my last week going to Tavacci.  I am really sad cause I really liked it.  We learned a lot of fun songs.  My teachers can't teach it anymore though and so I can't go.  But I still get to do my dance class.  We learned about rainbows this week.  We got to put different colors of die into milk and then a drop of dish soap in the middle.  The colors slowly came together and made a rainbow!  It was so cool!!!  Then just a couple days later I saw a real rainbow outside.  My dad said maybe there was a pot of gold at the other end, but it was to far away to go look!

Dancing and acting

You are becoming quite the performer! Do you get a little bit nervous before you sing or act in front of people? Sometimes people actually do better when they feel nervous just a little. I bet your story is done now. Maybe you could take a picture or two of it and post it here on your blog.

Week 24 Contact

This week  I started a dance class!  I even got a new dance outfit.  I also started going to Tavacci where I learn songs and how to act.  It's a lot of fun!!!  In math I am getting really good at writing my fractions.  I also started writing my own story.  It's called The Fairy and the Butterfly.  I even drew pictures.  I'm not done yet, but I think it is going to be really good.

Detective

What a cool experiment! In the picture "B" looks a little different. The other ones seem to match up very closely. I wonder why "B" looks like that? I'm going to have to try this experiment at home with my kids.

Week 23 Contact

I got to celebrate Dr. Suess' birthday this week.  Everything that I did was about Dr. Suess.  Even my math!!!  This is me separating different colored fish and making tally marks.  Then I had to write which color and the most and which had the least.
One of my art projects was to make The Cat in the Hats hat.  I used red and white tissue paper and ripped it up and glued it on to make his hat.
For science I got to make oobleck.  It was REALLY cool!!  It looked like it was liquid, but when you touched it it was actually solid.
It was REALLY messy, but a lot of fun.  My sister didn't want to do it because it was so messy.  But I liked it!!!

Week 22 Contact

This week I am still learning about being a detective in Science.  I learned how you can tell which pen was used to write a note.  I took 3 different markers and wrote on 3 different pieces of paper.
Then I dipped the paper into the water just a little bit so the water could soak up the paper.
This is what the different pens looked like when I was done.  My sister and brother tried to be tricky and  went into the other room to write on a piece of paper and see if I could figure out which pen they used.  I  figured it out every time.  Look at all the different colors that are in each black pen.

Good Sailors

Have you ever heard of the Vikings? They were good sailors like the Phoenicians. I wonder if those two groups ever crossed paths? Maybe they lived at different times in history.

I've found that adding to the money I have is a lot more fun than subtracting from it!

Have you ever noticed that when you put your fingers on the sticky side of Scotch or packing tape it really shows your fingerprints well?

Friday, February 18, 2011

Week 21 Contact

This week in science I learned how to look at different fingerprints and label them.  Then I got to dust and lift for fingerprints.  It didn't work very well but it was still fun.  In history we learned about the phoenicians and that they were very good sailors.  In writing I wrote about the Grimm brothers.  I also started reading Kit Kitridge.  She was a detective too!  In math I have been getting really good at adding money and have also been learning about fractions.

Detective work

Being a detective would require a lot of investigation, gathering of evidence, and thinking. It would be kind of like putting a giant puzzle together. As hard as investigating current crimes is, it must be much more challenging to try to figure out a mystery from over a thousand years ago! Obviously, there are no witnesses after that many years.

Week 20 Contact

This week my favorite thing we did in school was learn about King Tut in history.  We watched a movie and I really liked it!  In science we learned about detectives and how the police find the bad guys
First I had to write down measurements and what I look like.
Then I got to make fingerprints.  I took a pencil and scribbled on a piece of paper and then rubbed my fingers over it.
 It was fun but messy!
Then my mom took a piece of tape and put it on my fingers to get the fingerprint off.  This is me looking at how different my fingerprints are with a magnifying glass.
Here are my fingerprints.  It was fun learning about detectives, just like the detectives that tried to figure out what happened to King Tut!

Spelling Whiz

Great job on the spelling from last week! It is hard to know very much about ancient civilizations. What do you think they might be able to figure out about us a couple thousand years from now. Paper doesn't last very long, and what if the computers are all gone? Maybe we should be writing down some of our most important information in stone! Some of our buildings might last that long.

Week 19 Contact

This week I finished my math book, but I had to start another one!  I also got a perfect score on my spelling test.  My writing is getting really good and I really like doing it!  In history we have been learning more about ancient civilizations.  Today we talked about ancient Africa.  I learned that we don't know a whole lot about them because they didn't write a lot down.

Giggly

Getting traced would kind of tickle! I think your sister had a harder job because you're taller.

Have you ever done any tie dye? You could actually dye some clothes to make them that colorful.

Friday, January 28, 2011

Week 18 Contact

This week for my art project I traced my sister to make a life size picture of her.  She was super giggly and wouldn't hold still!
Then we decorated our pictures with lots of different colors.  I wish I had a coat with that many colors!

Learning fun!

You sure have a lot of fun learning! Hands-on activities make things more interesting. You are probably glad to do your painting inside the house, instead of inside a cave!

After using clay to do writing, you probably can see why many people could not read way back then. It would be awfully hard to reproduce or transport reading materials. A clay tablet probably wouldn't survive being put in the library drop box!

Week 17 Contact

My mom got me a new history book to study.  It's called The Story of the World.  I started learning about ancient civilizations again.  We talked about the nomads and the ancient egyptians.
I made a painting like they did a long time ago on cave walls.  I took a piece of brown paper and crumpled it up a lot to make it rough.  Then I painted a picture of a horse.  I painted the outside of the horse black and colored the inside brown.
My mom also got me a new writing book called Writing with Ease.  My sister does the top sentence and I work on the bottom.  I think my writing is getting a lot better.
For history we also made clay tablets.  The clay was really hard.  My mom had to help me to roll it out a little bit.  I wrote my name the way the Sumerians would write.  It was hard and I am glad we can write on paper even if it doesn't last as long!

Conserve that candle

Does your dad ever tell you to turn the lights off when you're not in a room? I bet back in the old days parents would tell kids to blow their candles out when they weren't needed! If the candles take a long time to make, people wouldn't want to waste all that work unless they really needed a little bit of light.

I think dividing a square pan of brownies into eighths would really help you remember your math lesson!

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Week 16 Contact

This is me doing my math.  I learned how to divide a square into eighths.   I also practiced my adding and subtracting.

I finished reading Felicity: An American Girl.  We learned how to make candles.  When we melted the wax it smelled like honey.  It took a long time to make a one candle.  I learned that during Felicity's time in 1778 they would only make candles once or twice a year because it took so long.
This is my candle.  It was fun lighting it.  We got to blow it out like a birthday candle, but it wasn't my birthday.  :)

Sick :-(

I'm really sorry to hear you've been sick. I hope you weren't sick for Christmas or New Year's.

It's good to hear you're still able to do some school, but make sure you get lots of rest too!

Week 15 Contact

This is Hailey's mom!  Hailey is sick today so I am filling this out for her today.  We are kind of getting back into the swing of things after getting back from christmas break, but she has continued to work on her math and is reading a new american girl book, Felicity.  We are waiting for a new history unit and writing as well.
